Compressing images and audio files

High-quality images and audio files are often too large to send. With Archiver you can create archives that will reduce your image and music files so you can share them quickly and easily.

To compress images and/or audio files::

Step 1

Drag in the images and/or audio files you want to compress.

Step 2

Click Create.

Step 3

From the format list choose ARCHIVER.

Step 4

Type the filename of your archive in the “Archive Name” box.

Step 5

If you’ve dragged in audio files, choose a format and compression level (where available) from the “Audio Pre Compression” pop-up menu.

Step 6

If you’ve dragged in image files, choose a format and compression level (where available) from the “Image Pre Compression” pop-up menu.

Step 7

Click Next.

If you want people to open the archive without requiring Archiver, select “Make ZIP compatible” after Step 6. You can then open the archive under Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and any operating system or application that supports the ZIP file format.

Important: some of the formats (such as JPEG) are lossy. That means that images and audio files will be of much smaller size, but also of slightly reduced quality. This is great if you just want to share the images and music files, but not if you want to backup the files. When you need to preserve file quality, instead choose a different format in Step 3.
